Play and Learn is a Theatre in education (TIE) programme; an applied theatre concept that uses drama to discuss and portray a challenging issue or topic to a wider audience.
With the Play and Learn programme, BreakAway use drama to create applied theatre shows based on current cultural issues that male offenders face, such as; society stigma, resettlement back in to society, drug misuse, homelessness and many more.
The participating prisoners research the topic and create the piece of theatre themselves. Then they perform it to an audience – other prisoners, prison staff, other professionals, family and even sometimes the general public.
There is almost always a post-show discussion on the topic where everyone can ask questions and share their experiences. This can often challenge people to really consider their views and assumptions on the chosen topic.
